Could the bones be Ana’s? Soon, Sawyer unearths more than bones: Blackmail, lies, and treachery simmer just below the surface of the most placid of Southern smiles, and tantalizing glimpses into the past are woven in with Sawyer’s wry narration. When Sawyer and the initiates stumble upon human bones during a White Gloves initiation, rumors fly. Ana, along with Sawyer’s mother, was part of a pregnancy pact 20 years ago, but Ana disappeared without a trace. However, an exclusive White Gloves invite provides a chance to investigate the fate of her mother’s friend Ana Gutierrez since Victoria, who’s running the show, shares Ana’s last name. She treasures her friendship with her cousin Lily and would like to spend some quality time over the summer with charming bad boy outsider Nick. Sawyer now knows her father’s identity, but revealing the truth could be explosive. It’s been a few months since former auto mechanic Sawyer signed an agreement with her grandmother Lillian to participate in debutante season in exchange for a college education and the truth about her real father. Newly minted Southern deb Sawyer Taft is invited to compete for a spot in a secret society called the White Gloves in the sequel to Little White Lies (2018).

The story is really just okay up to the point “Skippy” (the Alien AI) is introduced. Only problem? It definitely isn’t on this world. The REAL story, doesn’t begin until the protagonist, Joe, discovers an ancient alien AI that, among other things, is an asshole, and needs Joe to help him find an alien relic where other ancient AI’s might be congregating. The whole thing reads a bit like “Old Man’s War” but without all the crazy super powered stuff, and a lot more of the “soldier’s dilemma” as Joe begins to question the value of mankind’s new “alliance” with the Lizards. A ride up an orbital elevator, life in alien “bootcamp” (where it turns out we won’t be getting any super fancy new toys), and a world of alien cultures very (very) reminiscent of the “uplift” universe by David Brin. Over its course we’re treated to the standard Space Marine fare. This part of the story covers about the first third of the book. Turns out, those saviors of ours were the bad guys and we’re not the slaves to a race of Nazi lizards. This is all just how the story starts out. That invasion ends when another alien race appears above the Earth to scare the invaders away, and the next thing you know, mankind is being shipped off to the stars to help our saviors with their war across the galaxy. On Columbus day in the middle of Maine, a marine’s leave time is interrupted when the world is invaded by aliens. I really enjoyed this book, but based on what I’m seeing in the reviews I don’t think the rest of the series is for me. When fate throws the trio together, passions flare and the heat rises. But Jack can no longer avoid the woman who changed his life for the better and the worse when she opened the door and said “Hello, Alpha,” ten years ago. The normally easy going Colonel Jack Fordom repeatedly warns his friend away from the fiery omega. Still, from the moment he scented her, he knew she was his. She creates scandals, shoots strangers, and has no sense of self-preservation from dangerous alphas like himself. Lord Benedict Paxton has never met an omega like Beatrice Hartwell. So long as she can draw, duel, and eat whatever she pleases, Beatrice couldn’t wish for anything more, except (perhaps) more candied orange peel. ~~ The heat rages when two possessive alphas and a fiery omega mate up.~~Īs one of the notorious Hartwell omegas, Beatrice Hartwell leads the way in rejecting the Omega Virtues of Propriety, Obedience, and Serenity. What is an omega to do when the mate who rejected her and the alpha she shot are best friends and want to share her? There is one factor, both a cause and an effect, that cannot be debated: California is an enormously expensive place in which to live and work. Why California is what it is - a state with an immense economy but equally immense socioeconomic divisions - is the topic of perpetual academic, media and political debates. Gavin Newsom’s crusade against the oil industry over gas prices missed the larger point that the cost of nearly everything in California is very high. Woof!
