There is no question that the English language is remarkable – the product of conquest, migration and empire, combining words – and grammar – from Celtic, Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Viking, Norman French, Latin (again), ancient Greek and the languages of the British Empire. The teaching of ancient and modern languages in this country – whether European or Asian – is, at best, problematic and, at worst, declining towards extinction. Across all her writing, Isobelle shows a talent for balancing the mundane and the fantastic. Originally published in Australia as The Wrong Thing, the book features an ordinary housecat who stumbles upon something otherworldly. Isobelle's most recent picture book, Magic Night, is a collaboration with illustrator Declan Lee. The Little Fur quartet is an eco-fantasy starring a half-elf, half-troll heroine and is fully illustrated by the author herself. Her still-unfinished Gateway Trilogy has been favorably compared to The Wizard of Oz and the Chronicles of Narnia. In addition to her young-adult novels, such as the Obernewtyn Chronicles and Alyzon Whitestarr, Isobelle's published works include several middle-grade fantasies. The series has established her at the forefront of fantasy writing in Australia. Isobelle Carmody began the first novel of her highly acclaimed Obernewtyn Chronicles while she was still in high school. That’s not something I figured out until I went to Texas A&M and took a writing workshop with Steven Gould and started going to conventions and learning about how you actually do become a fiction writer. I didn’t know how you went about being a fiction writer. At the time, I think I wanted to major in journalism when I went to the university, because that was the only way I could conceive of being a writer at that point. I remember telling my parents when I was in high school that I wanted to be a writer and them not having much reaction to it. When did you realize you wanted to become a writer? Galaxy’s Edge: You said that you were always a reader. If you’d like to read this interview in print, check Issue 56 of Galaxy’s Edge Magazine. A guide to understanding and implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 is available at: Compliance to these criteria is measured in three levels: A, AA, or AAA. There are testable success criteria for each guideline. WCAG 2.0 contains 12 guidelines organized under 4 principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (POUR for short). This certifies it as a stable and referenceable technical standard. WCAG 2.0 is also an international standard, ISO 40500. This website adopts the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) as the accessibility standard for all its related web development and services. Examples of this include reporting the main armament of the German Panther tank as an 88mm gun, when it was in fact a 75mm, referring to the V-1 cruise missile as radio controlled, when it actually used a simple auto-pilot, and misidentifying a photograph of an American tank as an M-4 Sherman, when it is actually an M-5 Stuart. As with Michael Doubler's Closing With the Enemy, this book does a credible job refuting the image of GI's as tactically inept civilians in uniform, who triumphed only through overwhelming firepower.Īmbrose's reliance on oral history leads to occasional minor technical errors. In the Prologue, Ambrose outlines his main goal, to show that the American GI was a capable and effective fighting man. Liberally filled with soldier's stories and anecdotes, this is a highly readable and enjoyable book. Although the book has a narrative focus, this is primarily an oral history, using the soldier's own words as prime means of telling its story. Generals and strategy enter the picture only to the extent that they affect the front-line soldiers. As in D-Day, Ambrose concentrates on the individual soldier and his experiences. It begins, in fact, on June 7, where the earlier book ended. In many ways this book is a continuation of Ambrose's earlier work, D-Day. The narrative of a country trying to rebuild following the Civil War, and essentially the truth in how a piece of legislature could never abolish racism, is front and central to the story. I thought this aspect was incredibly well-rounded, as the author shows just how many areas racism can arise from, even after slavery was "abolished" following the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Please be aware, as I'm sure is expected, there are many inclusions of racism specific to the time period, which could be a trigger for some readers. This was a stressful week for our family, and being able to escape into an atmospheric novel during a time period I haven't read much of was wonderful. Her writing is equal parts powerful narrative and comforting bear hug, and her words have a smoothness like literary butter that is intelligent and accessible to all. Beverly Jenkins name continually comes up as a giant in the genre, and I can certainly see why. □ As someone who is still very new to the historical romance genre, I've been branching out with some of the seemingly fan favorites, since I haven't been sure where to start. I was so engrossed in this book that I didn't even stop to save quotes like I usually do. |
